A True Heritage Breed
- Berkshires originated from England and are named for the county from which they came; over 300 years ago
- Berkshires have the oldest pure bred swine pedigree history in the United States, dating back to 1875
- The first Berkshire boar to be recorded in the American Berkshire Association registry was bred by Queen Victoria herself. Many of the US Berkshire breed pigs are descended from these original registered animals.
Description
Markings: The Berkshire is black with white legs, face and tail.
Body type: Very deep-sided with a strong, uniform arch of back and muscular, firm build. Short neck and short, blocky legs with strong feet.
Head: Relatively short snout. The face has a slight dish-shape with a large jowl and an upturned nose. Ears tend to be medium-sized and erect.
Size: Medium to large animals, around 600 pounds at maturity.
Temperament: Excellent disposition. Friendly and curious.
Production traits: Good mothering ability with high milk production. Hardy, performs well in outdoor operations.
Taste
- The Berkshire pork is prized for juiciness, sweet flavor and tenderness, it is pink to almost red hued and heavily marbled.
- The meat is rich and has a high fat content which makes it very suitable for long and high-temperature cooking.
- The fact that Happy Our Farm hogs are grass-fed on pasture, offered certified 100% organic feed and finished on all natural Non-GMO acorns and crushed black walnuts set this flavor above the rest.

We typically sell as 1/2 or whole hogs. They arrive on the farm in late winter / early spring. Due to our free range production process we do not breed. The hogs are typically harvested in the fall. The consumer pays a hanging weight fee and is responsible for the butcher fees.
At certain times of the year, select cuts are available as frozen for per pound pricing. Please contact us for cuts and pricing.
